Practical guide
How the Overtime Calculator works.
An overtime calculator separates hours and cost using a threshold, base rate, and multiplier that you control. It shows regular wages, overtime wages, the additional premium, and estimated gross pay as separate values.
This separation matters because overtime wages include straight time already earned for those hours. The overtime premium is only the additional amount above straight time. Neither value determines which rule applies to a worker.
Overtime hours
Total hours minus the selected threshold, with a minimum of zero.
Overtime wages
Overtime hours times the base rate times the selected multiplier.
Additional premium
Overtime hours times the base rate times the multiplier minus one.
Worked example
For 48 hours at $24 per hour with a 40 hour threshold and a 1.5 multiplier, the estimate is $960 in regular wages and $288 in overtime wages, for $1,248 total gross pay.

Common questions
Does this calculator use a fixed 40 hour threshold?
No. Forty hours is the starting value, but you can change the weekly threshold and multiplier to reflect the policy being reviewed.
Can I use this result as a final payroll or staffing record?
Use the result as a planning aid. Confirm policies, workweek boundaries, pay rules, staffing requirements, and final records with the people responsible for them.
What is the difference between overtime pay and overtime premium?
Overtime pay is the full amount paid for overtime hours. The premium is the additional amount above the straight time value already included for those hours.
Can I change the overtime multiplier?
Yes. The multiplier is an editable planning input so the result can reflect the policy being evaluated.
